AI is no longer just campaign copy
The fortnight's clearest pattern was not one launch. It was simultaneity. On 4 Sep, Datadog published a blog on building workflows with AI agents and added a CI/CD product page. On 5 Sep, it followed with a product page for LLM as a Judge and a blog on workload protection response actions. On 12 Sep, it added two observability pipeline product pages and six blogs covering areas including AI development and product launches.
New Relic moved in the same lane. On 4 Sep, its homepage navigation added New Relic Autopilot and AI Observability, alongside new section headings including observability built to understand AI. On 9 Sep, it added content on instrumenting LLM routers and a product page for Instant Observability with Linkerd and OpenTelemetry. On 14 Sep, it created product event pages for AI performance and product updates.
The rest of the category echoed the same buying thesis. PagerDuty added four AI-related blog pages on 11 Sep, including an ebook and infographics on AI value and shadow AI. Sentry added an agent tracing blog page on 10 Sep and, on 4 Sep, listed roles whose descriptions referred to building an AI-native future for application monitoring. Grafana Labs posted machine-learning related engineering roles on 10 Sep, then added two US remote roles on 14 Sep focused on sales and strategic partnerships.
The open-source surface area expanded fast
Repo creation was unusually dense across the developer-led vendors. New Relic created four repositories on 6 Sep, added more on 7 Sep, released nri-kubernetes 4.7.2 on 9 Sep, then created eight repositories on 14 Sep, including opentelemetry-demo, entity-definitions, newrelic-agent-control, newrelic-opamp-rs and newrelic-azure-functions.
Grafana Labs was just as active. It created repositories on 5 Sep across areas including data sources and AI marketplace work, released azure-prometheus-datasource 1.0.3 on 6 Sep, added projects including faro Android and React Native SDK work on 7 Sep, released grafana-pathfinder-app 2.12.1 on 9 Sep, and introduced eight more repositories on 14 Sep, including alloy-workshop, opentelemetry-ebpf-instrumentation, mcp-grafana and crossplane-provider-grafana.
Sentry continued to push SDK and platform work. It released sentry-java 8.55.0 on 5 Sep, sentry-unreal 1.22.0 on 6 Sep, junior 0.203.0 on 7 Sep and Sentry 26.8.0 on 11 Sep, with features including NOT IN support for querying detectors and alert editing improvements. PagerDuty's public developer motion was quieter, but it still shipped python-pagerduty 7.0.0 on 4 Sep and 7.0.1 on 5 Sep.
The message is being rewritten in public
The most useful signal was sequence. New Relic put the hero line 'End visibility silos' live on 4 Sep, added navigation for View Platform, New Relic Autopilot and AI Observability, then by 8 Sep the hero headline had moved to an empty state while View Platform and several observability and AI navigation items were removed. That is not a finished billboard. It is a live positioning reset.
Datadog's adjustment was cleaner. On 13 Sep, its navigation replaced broader labels such as Metrics and Serverless with more explicit entries including Custom Metrics, Serverless Monitoring and Application Performance Monitoring. The same day, its AI Credits tier copy changed: Bits Investigation was added, while lines including Reduce time to incident resolution, AI built for your stack, Automated investigations and Custom AI agents were removed.
PagerDuty and Sentry were also pruning visible surfaces. PagerDuty removed an operations cloud demo blog page and a Warriors product page on 5 Sep, then on 11 Sep removed a Golden State Warriors customer page while changing customer wall assets. Sentry removed a careers page on 3 Sep, created two career pages on 4 Sep, then introduced a new careers page on 10 Sep while removing two outdated careers pages. In this market, product direction is often visible first in the sitemap, not the keynote.
Reliability stayed part of the story
The irony of the category is that its own status pages are market documents. Grafana Labs reported a major incident under investigation in ap-south-1 on 3 Sep, a minor Tempo and Mimir read and write failure incident lasting about 162 minutes on 4 Sep, three further incidents on 5 Sep including a major Hosted Grafana degradation in US Central resolved in about 219 minutes, and three minor incidents on 9 Sep involving AWS Germany database load, Geomap Tiles and prod-us-east-2 latency.
Sentry reported degraded span ingestion in the US on 3 Sep, lasting about 374 minutes. On 8 Sep, CVE-2026-83527 was published with a CVSS score of 8.1, describing remote unauthenticated administrative access in Sentry versions prior to R10.8.2, R10.7.3 and R10.6.4. On 11 Sep, Sentry reported a minor US ingestion delay lasting about 57 minutes and a major incident involving elevated 500 errors lasting around 61 minutes.
PagerDuty had its own security item in view: CVE-2026-71216, published on 4 Sep and observed on 8 Sep, described cleartext HTTP transmission of an integration routing key in an alarm hook, with a CVSS score of 5.3. Datadog's observed operational incident set was lighter, with two minor incidents on 3 Sep, including delayed DBM monitor evaluation data resolved after about 17 minutes.
Commercial pressure is visible under the build-out
Hiring still points to expansion, especially where AI and enterprise distribution meet. Datadog posted 11 roles in the week to 8 Sep, including eight engineering roles related to machine learning and AI capabilities, then 14 more roles in the week to 13 Sep, including nine engineering, four sales and one marketing opening. New Relic posted five openings by 13 Sep across engineering and account management, including Lead Software Engineer roles and renewal account management roles.
Grafana Labs reported, in an article observed on 5 Sep, that it had crossed 10,000 customers in an announcement made on 26 Aug, with the growth attributed to increased AI adoption across its platform. It then posted remote engineering roles tied to machine learning on 10 Sep and US remote roles focused on sales and strategic partnerships on 14 Sep. New Relic added Purplle to its public customer wall on 13 Sep and created a Spanish-language customer page for Verisk on 5 Sep. Sentry added FASHN AI to its public customer wall on 7 Sep.
PagerDuty's fortnight was more mixed. On 3 Sep and 4 Sep, articles reported a headcount reduction of about 15 percent alongside second quarter fiscal 2027 results. The same reporting said annual recurring revenue had topped $500 million, free cash flow reached $32.8 million and the company had achieved five consecutive quarters of GAAP profitability. Datadog's market narrative moved too: articles on 4 Sep described a 22 percent monthly stock drop, while on 11 Sep reporting said CEO comments at the Citi TMT Conference helped drive a 7 percent stock price jump.

This was not a quiet fortnight. The observability category is being rebuilt around AI-facing workloads, agentic operations and OpenTelemetry-adjacent plumbing, with Datadog, New Relic, Grafana Labs, Sentry and PagerDuty all moving visible assets in that direction between 4 Sep and 14 Sep. The sharper read is operational: the vendors that looked most active also exposed the most change in public surfaces, from New Relic's homepage reset to Datadog's 13 Sep AI Credits and navigation edits, while incidents and CVEs kept reliability credibility in view. For operators, the market is no longer about who says AI most loudly. It is about who can make AI observability, open-source distribution, enterprise packaging and their own production discipline line up at the same time.
