Agents became the category’s organising idea
The fortnight’s clearest pattern was not one launch, but a cluster. On 20 Sep, Stripe appeared in coverage of AI agent payments involving XRP and RLUSD. On 24 Sep, GoCardless announced the first agentic account-to-account payment in the UK, including an agentic charity payment. On 26 Sep, Checkout.com said it was developing its own agent infrastructure while also supporting three rival protocols, a story that was still being carried on 28 Sep.
Stripe then acquired OpenRouter on 26 Sep, with coverage linking the deal to security and token fraud. That matters because agentic commerce is not just a new checkout surface. It moves risk from the user session into delegated intent, authentication and spend controls.
The quieter tell sat in the product surfaces. On 26 Sep, Stripe’s navigation added Guide me and a section headed Get Stripe product recommendations, while removing a previous enterprise infrastructure heading. On 27 Sep, Adyen added 11 product pages, including agentic commerce fraud and dynamic currency conversion, while removing 11 pages tied to payment methods. The same shift showed up in repositories and docs, with Adyen creating MCP-related assets during the period and Plaid adding a webhook events documentation page on 28 Sep.
The category is being re-cut around who can safely let software initiate money movement. Cards, bank payments and wallets still matter, but the message changed from acceptance breadth to orchestration, fraud and machine-readable control.
Adyen made a finance and packaging move
Adyen’s week was unusually coherent. On 19 Sep, it added multi-currency support to its Transaction-based tier. On 25 Sep, it added Interchange++ pricing to the same tier and removed one integration from it. These are small public changes, but they are the kind operators notice because they alter how pricing and international acceptance are explained before a sales call begins.
The pricing edits landed around a leadership transition. Adyen appointed Niclas Neglen, Klarna’s CFO, as its next finance chief, with announcements appearing on 23 Sep, 24 Sep, 26 Sep and 27 Sep and the transition set for February 2027. In the same window, Adyen joined the Guidewire Marketplace as an approved global payment partner for insurers on 18 Sep and 20 Sep, announced a payments deal with SNKRDUNK for SODA expansion on 18 Sep, partnered with Flatpay on embedded finance for European SMBs on 23 Sep, and was chosen by Limitless Technology Group on 26 Sep.
The sequence is the point. Pricing was adjusted before and during a run of partnership and leadership news. Product pages were also rewritten, with payment-method pages removed on 19 Sep and 27 Sep while new pages for account controls, agentic commerce fraud and dynamic currency conversion appeared. That is not a rebrand. It is a tightening of the commercial story around finance, risk and vertical distribution.
Local rails became the global battleground
Checkout.com integrated the UAE’s Jaywan Domestic Card Scheme into its acquiring platform on 28 Sep. One day earlier, on 27 Sep, it added a section on Australia’s 2026 card payment changes and removed a section on mastering payments in Europe and the UK. That is a notable editorial swap: less generic regional coverage, more market-specific regulatory and scheme guidance.
Stripe’s developer releases pointed the same way. On 27 Sep, version 23.20.0 of stripe-android fixed redirects with Alipay+ and the Alipay SDK and added support for Bizum. Checkout.com’s 25 Sep Magento release added Adobe Commerce 2.4.9 and PHP 8.5 compatibility, removed PHP 7.4 compatibility, and added a Flow refund feature. Its 19 Sep PHP SDK release added fields for accommodation and airline payment setup.
Plaid’s week sat adjacent to the same trend. On 20 Sep, Plaid partnered with ID.me to help government agencies verify financial beneficiaries and accounts. On 25 Sep, it added repositories for Plaid Link across Flutter, React Native and iOS, after adding plaid-link-android on 19 Sep. The rails contest is no longer only about coverage. It is about how quickly a provider can make local schemes, verification and mobile developer flows feel first-party.
The execution layer got louder and less forgiving
The advertising tape was busy. On 17 Sep, Adyen had 39 new Google ad creatives, with 40 running in total. On 26 Sep, Stripe had 37 new creatives, Adyen 32, Plaid 24 and GoCardless 9, each also showing 40 running in total. On 28 Sep, Stripe still had 28 new creatives and Adyen 34. The paid-message rotation was not confined to one player, which makes the category feel less like a quiet infrastructure market and more like an active demand-capture fight.
Hiring and site churn showed similar movement. Stripe added 62 job listings and removed 38 on 27 Sep, after sitemap changes on 25 Sep that included 140 new job listings and 102 careers pages removed. Adyen listed engineering, compliance, finance and account roles across multiple dates, including 15 postings on 19 Sep and 11 on 25 Sep. Plaid repeatedly added and removed careers pages from 19 Sep through 28 Sep. GoCardless posted engineering and account roles on 25 Sep.
There were also reliability reminders. Plaid reported three incidents on 18 Sep, including Chime connection disruption, delayed transaction updates and elevated item add errors, then a major Bank of America connection disruption on 26 Sep that lasted about 94 minutes. GoCardless reported on 25 Sep an issue with intermittent ARUDD-8 failures for Nationwide Bank and a major delayed BACS reports outage that lasted about 1469 minutes before resolution. Stripe had CVE-2026-9832 published on 19 Sep, a medium severity issue affecting the Stripe for WooCommerce plugin up to and including version 5.0.8.
This is the operating reality beneath the agentic narrative. Vendors can publish new protocols, pages and ads in days, but the buying committee still judges them on bank connectivity, plugin hygiene, reconciliation and incident handling.
| Company | Change | Date |
|---|---|---|

| Adyen | Interchange++ pricing added to the Transaction-based tier, with one integration removed from that tier. | 2026-09-25 |
Agentic payments became the live theme of the fortnight, but the winners will not be decided by the word agentic. Stripe, Checkout.com and GoCardless all put agent-led money movement into market between 20 Sep and 28 Sep, while Adyen sharpened pricing, product pages and finance leadership around control. At the same time, local rails moved fast, with Jaywan, Bizum, Alipay+, government beneficiary verification and vertical SDK fields all showing up in the same 14-day window. The market is converging on one buyer promise: let new software actors move money, but keep the finance team, compliance team and developer team comfortable while they do it.
