Agents are becoming the work graph's new front door

A noisy fortnight put AI agents into every work management pitch, while public-market scrutiny sharpened around execution.

The category has picked its new wrapper

The work management market spent the fortnight trying to make agents feel native, not adjacent. On 5 Oct, monday.com held Elevate '26 with an AI focus and the promise that every attendee could build an AI agent. On the same day, coverage of Notion AI highlighted custom agents for project management. On 4 Oct, Asana's chief executive discussed a vision of Asana becoming an operating system for human-AI teams.

That is the shift. The pitch is no longer just tasks, databases or dashboards. The new claim is that the work graph becomes more valuable when agents can read it, act inside it and sit alongside teams. Airtable's homepage changes across 3 Oct to 5 Oct said the same thing in copy form, repeatedly moving between workspace connectivity and teams, workflows and agents in one space.

This is not a quiet semantic turn. It is the market choosing the surface area it wants buyers to remember. Agents are being positioned as the front door to work management, while the underlying system of record is being kept in the background.

Airtable's homepage became the week's tell

Airtable's public messaging moved unusually often across 3 Oct, 4 Oct and 5 Oct. The hero alternated between a teams-and-workflows connectivity message and a more explicit agents-in-one-space message. The subtext also moved between AI-powered workflows, team collaboration and agents included. Calls to action changed too, with 'Get in touch' and 'Try the template for free' appearing and disappearing in different observations.

That matters because the company was not changing the category, it was testing the noun. Is Airtable best understood as the connected workspace for teams, or as the place where teams and agents build together. The distinction is commercial. One phrase sells consolidation. The other sells AI participation.

The useful signal was not any single headline. It was the oscillation. When a vendor changes the same hero frame several times over a few days, the market is watching a positioning decision being made in public. Operators who only read launch posts miss this kind of indecision. Operators who watch the page see the argument before it is settled.

Airtable also changed more than copy. On 4 Oct, its public marketing homepage stack included Google Analytics, Marketo and Next.js, with HubSpot removed. Taken together with the homepage churn, the company looked focused on both message and go-to-market plumbing during the same window.

monday.com faced the AI week under a sharper lens

monday.com had the loudest fortnight and the most mixed external readout. On 5 Oct, JPMorgan's downgrade from Overweight to Neutral was reported, with a new price target of $87. Other reports around 28 Sep to 30 Sep described a 6.4 per cent stock fall, a 5.1 per cent rise and further moves including a 2 per cent premarket dip after the downgrade. Wall Street Zen was also reported to have upgraded monday.com to Buy.

The result is a clean split between product narrative and market judgement. The company used Elevate '26 on 5 Oct to put AI agents at the centre of its story. Analysts and market coverage, meanwhile, kept returning to growth challenges, ratings and stock volatility. For a public work management company, that combination raises the standard for proof. AI cannot just be a theme. It has to defend growth expectations.

The developer signal was more constructive. On 3 Oct, monday.com created a new GitHub repository called monday-graphql-api, with its top repositories showing 1,226 stars in total. It is a small item beside a JPMorgan note, but it points to the same strategic requirement: if agents are to act on the work graph, the graph needs accessible interfaces.

Governance and cost moves added pressure to the AI race

Asana's fortnight was less theatrical but not quiet. On 29 Sep, Asana announced new board appointments. On 30 Sep, an officer proposed selling 6,318 shares, including 5,317 restricted shares. On 3 Oct, Asana had new job postings including a Principal Software Engineer for the Asana Platform and a Senior Product Manager for AI Studio, across Chicago, New York City and San Francisco. Its content changes on 3 Oct also added product-specific terms pages and new resources on digital workspaces, marketing, webinars and team collaboration, while removing older AI maturity and work innovation assessment pages.

Notion's activity pointed in the same direction. On 3 Oct, it posted four San Francisco roles, including Lifecycle Marketing Manager and Head of Sales Recruiting, with job descriptions highlighting collaborative AI workspace positioning. On 4 Oct and 5 Oct, coverage focused on Notion AI's project management capabilities and custom agents, with separate mention of a Notion AI mobile app download.

Jira's parent, Atlassian, supplied the hardest operating signal. On 4 Oct, reports said Atlassian was cutting 1,600 jobs as part of a strategic shift towards artificial intelligence initiatives. In a category built on long-lived customer workflows, that is a significant marker. The AI race is not only a product roadmap. It is starting to reshape headcount, governance, hiring and public-market expectations at the same time.

The takeaway

Work management has converged on the same story: agents belong inside the work graph. The evidence was unusually broad, from monday.com's Elevate '26 agent-building push on 5 Oct, to Notion's custom agents coverage, Asana's human-AI operating system message and Airtable's repeated homepage rewrites across 3 Oct to 5 Oct. The pressure is that public markets, governance changes and cost actions are arriving at the same time. The winners will not be the vendors that say agents most often. They will be the ones that make the agent layer feel native while proving it improves growth, retention and platform depth.
