AI moved from feature copy to category grammar
The last fortnight made AI the default language of DevOps and observability, not a side campaign. On 15 Sep, Datadog drew press attention for shifting research and development towards AI and GPU technologies. On 18 Sep it published blogs on AI training in Kubernetes, cloud cost management and incident response in Slack, then on 20 Sep listed seven new jobs, including five engineering roles related to machine learning.
New Relic followed the same arc. On 9 Sep it added content on instrumenting LLM routers and Instant Observability with Linkerd and OpenTelemetry. On 16 Sep it published on "Ground Truth" in enterprise AI and announced general availability of New Relic Lens. On 19 Sep it added five more blog posts spanning AI visibility, LLM observability, synthetic monitoring, Kubernetes metrics and centralised log management.
Sentry pushed the agent story hardest. On 10 Sep it added a blog page for an agent tracing series. On 14 Sep it listed Vienna engineering roles for telemetry experience and agent tracing, with descriptions pointing to an AI-native future. On 17 Sep it launched product pages for an AI search assistant and agent tracing. Grafana Labs, meanwhile, used developer surfaces: on 16 Sep it released version 0.46.0 of the agento11y plugin with MCP tools cards, and on 19 Sep its videos covered AI versus manual dashboard creation, OpenTelemetry and Grafana Git Sync.
Reliability was the counterweight to the agent rush
The week also showed why observability vendors are not allowed a loose operational week. On 8 Sep, CVE-2026-83527 named Sentry versions prior to R10.8.2, R10.7.3 and R10.6.4, with a CVSS score of 8.1 and remote unauthenticated administrative access described in the notice. On 16 Sep, CVE-2026-90999 was published for Sentry Seer with a CVSS score of 9.8, tied to a multi-stage trust-boundary violation allowing unauthenticated attacker-controlled telemetry to execute code by an agent in a privileged context. On 11 Sep Sentry reported US ingestion delays and elevated 500 errors, and on 19 Sep it reported delayed EU error ingestion for about 200 minutes plus spans ingestion delays of about 41 minutes.
Datadog had its own security disclosures. On 14 Sep, CVE-2026-50270 and CVE-2026-50276 named the dd-trace-java and dd-trace-rb clients over W3C baggage extraction item limits. On 17 Sep, CVE-2026-50275 and CVE-2026-50277 named the PHP Tracer and dd-trace-cpp, each with a CVSS score of 7.5, tied to deserialisation and parsing of baggage headers. On 20 Sep Datadog also reported a minor incident involving delayed events triggered by emails, resolved after about 96 minutes.
The pattern was broader than two vendors. On 8 Sep, CVE-2026-71216 was published for PagerDuty's alarm hook transmitting an integration routing key over cleartext HTTP, with a CVSS score of 5.3 and the note that PagerDuty typically serves the endpoint over HTTPS and redirects HTTP requests. Grafana Labs reported minor incidents on 9 Sep across AWS Germany, Geomap Tiles and prod-us-east-2, then four more on 16 Sep including synthetic monitoring execution time and CloudWatch request timeouts. New Relic logged an 18 Sep Salesforce service disruption as no impact, resolved after about 332 minutes. The market is selling machine-speed diagnosis while proving, in public status pages and CVE feeds, how it handles its own fault lines.
Small edits exposed the real packaging work
The most useful signals were not the loudest launches. On 13 Sep, Datadog changed its AI Credits tier, adding Bits Investigation while removing phrases including "Reduce time to incident resolution", "AI built for your stack", "Automated investigations" and "Custom AI agents". The same day, its navigation added "Custom Metrics", "Serverless Monitoring" and "Application Performance Monitoring", while removing "Metrics", "Serverless" and "Cloudcraft". That is a move from broad labels towards buying-language specificity.
Grafana Labs made a quieter pricing edit on 19 Sep, adding "Everything in Free plus" to its Pro tier. New Relic made a more awkward-looking surface change on 8 Sep, when the homepage hero changed from "End visibility silos" to an empty state and navigation items including "View Platform" and sections related to observability and AI were removed. By 16 Sep and 19 Sep, New Relic was back in market with Lens and a run of AI and observability content, which made the earlier homepage gap look like part of a larger site restructuring rather than a standalone message.
The clustering mattered. On 17 Sep, Datadog had 40 new Google ad creatives observed, Sentry had 39, and PagerDuty had 30, with each showing 40 creatives running in total. On 14 Sep, Sentry removed 162 blog pages while adding careers material and a Bolt partnership header to its public customer wall. On 11 Sep, PagerDuty added AI content and changed showcased customer references, removing Golden State Warriors and UWM-related assets while adding a new customer story. In this market, positioning now changes in edits, tiers, navigation and ad libraries before it appears as a launch narrative.
Distribution pressure showed up in hiring and routes to market
Grafana Labs had the clearest commercial expansion signal. On 18 Sep, DataX Solution was announced as an authorised distributor for Grafana Labs across the Middle East, Africa and India. On 19 Sep, Grafana Labs listed 29 openings for Commercial and Enterprise Account Executive roles across remote locations including Israel, Italy, Spain and the UK, with descriptions stating that Grafana Cloud is used by more than 10,000 organisations.
Datadog remained the highest-velocity hiring machine in the observed set. On 18 Sep it listed 23 new postings, including 10 in sales, five in marketing, four in customer success and four in engineering or machine learning. On 20 Sep it added seven more, including machine learning engineering roles in São Paulo, Dublin and New York. Its press cycle stayed active too: on 18 Sep Nykredit A S was reported to have made a $152.77 million investment in Datadog, and multiple articles highlighted enterprise customer expansion.
PagerDuty's commercial story was more financial and operational. On 18 Sep, its Q2 FY27 report showed revenue up 1% quarter on quarter to $124.4 million and annual recurring revenue above $500 million. On 21 Sep, press coverage focused on its financial situation, restructuring efforts, market position and AI-related growth opportunities. New Relic added Purplle to its public customer wall on 13 Sep, while Sentry added a Fashn customer page on 7 Sep and a Bolt partnership header on 14 Sep. The category is still expanding routes to demand, but the burden has shifted from pure observability breadth to credible AI workflows, secure agents and regional sales coverage.
| Company | Change | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Datadog | Bits Investigation added to AI Credits tier. "Reduce time to incident resolution", "AI built for your stack", "Automated investigations" and "Custom AI agents" removed from AI Credits tier. | 2026-09-13 |
| Grafana Labs | "Everything in Free plus" added to Pro tier. | 2026-09-19 |
AI observability is no longer a campaign layer. It is being rebuilt into jobs, product pages, pricing tiers, repositories, ads and sales motion. Datadog is tightening packaging around AI Credits and core monitoring terms, Grafana Labs is pairing open-source velocity with regional distribution and Pro-tier edits, New Relic is reworking its surface while pushing Lens and LLM observability content, Sentry is betting visibly on agent tracing, and PagerDuty is tying AI to incident response while reporting $124.4 million in Q2 FY27 revenue and more than $500 million in ARR. The strategic constraint is trust: the same fortnight brought high-severity CVEs, ingestion delays and public status incidents across the field. Buyers will not separate AI promises from operational proof.
