CRM's AI race turns into a surface-area contest

Salesforce bought research agents, HubSpot bundled AI, and the mid-market vendors widened where CRM can be used.

The takeaway

CRM and sales tech is now being fought on three linked fronts: AI capability, distribution surface and operational trust. Salesforce used acquisitions, homepage changes and heavy paid creative rotation to harden its agentic CRM position. HubSpot shipped AI bundles and app-card workflow improvements, but its 5 Oct downgrade and customer growth miss showed investors are demanding proof beyond product velocity. Attio and Pipedrive kept expanding the practical surface area through apps, messaging channels, meetings and customer proof. The category is not waiting for one definitive AI launch. It is being rebuilt through many small public moves, and the winners will be the vendors that make AI feel useful, reachable and safe at the same time.

AI moved from feature copy to corporate action

The category’s centre of gravity shifted again this fortnight. Salesforce announced a definitive agreement to acquire Listen Labs on 30 Sep, with the deal reported at $2 billion, and further reports on 4 Oct said Salesforce would pay $2 billion for the AI research agents company. Salesforce also completed the acquisition of Fin, according to 4 Oct reports, after a 27 Sep report put the AI customer service platform deal at $3.6 billion.

HubSpot answered from the product side. On 4 Oct it announced Breeze Assistant and an AI Growth Bundle, and its changelog the same day described a streamlined Starter plan for marketing, sales and follow-up, with built-in best practices. Earlier, on 30 Sep, HubSpot added six product pages focused on AI concepts including agentic AI and AI workflows.

Pipedrive put AI closer to the working seller. On 3 Oct it rolled out its Nova AI meeting tool globally and announced new integrations with WhatsApp and Messenger. This is the practical counter-position to Salesforce’s acquisition scale and HubSpot’s bundle logic: put the assistant into the meeting and the conversation channel, not just into the platform narrative.

HubSpot’s product push met a harder investor read

HubSpot’s week showed the gap between product momentum and market patience. On 5 Oct, Raymond James downgraded HubSpot from Outperform to Market Perform, citing concerns over 2027 growth projections. The same event noted that HubSpot had beaten revenue expectations but fallen short on customer growth metrics, followed by a 20% decline in the stock price.

That reaction landed after a busy run of AI and platform moves. On 29 Sep, reports said HubSpot acquired Trigify and Dashworks, with Dashworks reported at $18.2 million. On 28 Sep, Dealroom.co reports said HubSpot acquired Futurepedia for $19.1 million and Frame AI for $51.4 million. On 2 Oct, HubSpot introduced App Cards to reduce tab-hopping and context switching, while Microsoft Advertising added a HubSpot integration.

The sequencing matters. HubSpot removed its CRM Starter product page on 30 Sep, launched AI-centred pages the same day, then put Breeze Assistant and the AI Growth Bundle into market on 4 Oct. The investor downgrade arrived on 5 Oct. The public story changed before the market verdict did, which is often where the real signal sits.

Salesforce is tightening the agentic frame

Salesforce spent the fortnight making Agentforce feel less like a product line and more like the company wrapper. On 26 Sep, the homepage hero changed to “Get started with the #1 Agentic CRM,” with subtext stating that humans with agents drive customer success together and a new “Explore Agentforce” button. On 29 Sep, the hero changed again to “Salesforce. The #1 Agentic CRM,” with calls to action including “Start for free,” “Watch demo,” “Watch all demos” and “Watch full demo,” while “Explore Agentforce” was removed.

That homepage oscillation sat beside heavy commercial pressure. On 29 Sep, Salesforce had 40 new Google ad creatives running, with creatives first shown from 16 Sep and publishers including Salesforce, Inc. and Salesforce Japan. On 1 Oct and 2 Oct it again had 40 new creatives running. This was not a quiet repositioning. It was a synchronised homepage, acquisition and paid-media push.

The risk is that the agentic label now concentrates scrutiny. On 27 Sep, SecurityWeek and forkast.news articles detailed vulnerabilities in Salesforce’s Agentforce allowing zero-click data exfiltration. On 4 Oct, Salesforce also experienced an outage covered in reporting about uptime. In public-market CRM, AI ambition and operational trust are now being judged in the same breath.

Attio and Pipedrive worked the edges of the market

Attio’s movement was less about a single launch and more about app-surface expansion. On 26 Sep it added 13 product pages, including apps such as Memoket and Probo Access Review. On 28 Sep it added a Google Chrome app page. On 29 Sep it introduced five more app pages, including agentteams, swan and whalesync. On 1 Oct it launched pages for Asyntai AI Chatbot, CVR Pilot, Echo and Instantly, followed by Kallio and Signal Raven AI on 2 Oct and Targenix on 3 Oct.

That cadence says something about the modern CRM wedge. Attio is not trying to look like a monolith in these events. It is making the app directory and data rules part of the product story, including a new documentation page for managing data rules on 2 Oct. It also kept paid distribution warm, with 38 new Google creatives recorded on 1 Oct and 36 on 5 Oct, both out of 40 running creatives.

Pipedrive’s fortnight was more classic SMB revenue execution. On 30 Sep it added the Extruflex case study to its public customer wall and launched the case study page. On 3 Oct it shipped a client-nodejs fix for custom fields with null values, announced WhatsApp and Messenger integrations, and rolled out Nova AI globally. It also kept its ad engine at full capacity, with 40 new Google creatives on 1 Oct and 2 Oct, then 38 on 5 Oct.

Reliability became part of the AI sales pitch

The operational tape was not clean. Attio reported a minor workflow processing delay on 30 Sep that lasted around 244 minutes and was resolved. Close reported a major application impairment on 2 Oct that lasted around 26 minutes before being resolved. HubSpot was linked on 3 Oct to CVE-2026-86834, a MetForm WordPress plugin vulnerability involving its integration with HubSpot Forms and improper access to a debug file, with no CVSS score assigned at publication.

None of these events changes the category direction on its own. Together with the Salesforce Agentforce vulnerability reporting on 27 Sep and outage coverage on 4 Oct, they show the trade-off that buyers will increasingly interrogate. CRM vendors are asking customers to entrust more workflows, conversations and agent actions to their platforms. The response from the market will not be based only on model capability. It will also be based on uptime, integration hygiene and the blast radius of automation.

Close had one positive commercial proof point in the same period. On 1 Oct, its customer page added RevPilot and a new case study titled “How RevPilot Increases Revenue 20-30% with No New Ad Spend”. Even in an AI-heavy fortnight, plain revenue proof still earned space on the homepage estate.
