The takeaway

Observability is being recast as the control plane for AI-era production: Grafana pushed agentic operations at ObservabilityCON, Datadog pursued cloud security through the reported Upwind bid, New Relic reset leadership around AI observability, and Sentry kept widening SDK coverage. Pricing stayed still, but every other market surface moved. The operators to watch are not merely adding dashboards. They are trying to own the loop between telemetry, security, incident response and automated remediation.

The roadmap is now agentic

This was not a quiet fortnight. On 21 Oct, Grafana Labs used ObservabilityCON 2026 to introduce faster full-text search, smarter data optimisation for Grafana Cloud, a Grafana Marketplace, AI Watchers, Pages, code-fixing agents and an extended Knowledge Graph. On 22 Oct and 23 Oct, the same launch cycle widened into Agent Observability and partnerships with Nvidia and DataX, with regional emphasis including India, the Middle East and Africa.

The positioning change was visible in the small print as well as the keynote cycle. On 21 Oct, Grafana replaced the website heading 'Shaping the future of observability' with 'AI Week recap: See what's next for AI in production'. That is the category's new centre of gravity in one edit: less generic monitoring, more production AI control loops.

Sentry moved on the developer side of the same theme. On 21 Oct, @spotlightjs/spotlight 4.12.0 added Sentry User Feedback events and surfaced gen_ai spans in AI Traces. On 24 Oct, sentry-javascript 11.9.0 renamed certain span origins to align with other v11 origins. On 25 Oct, the Sentry SDK for .NET 7.0.0-rc.2 added .NET 11 support and consolidated initialisation, with release notes flagging breaking changes.

Datadog is signalling security appetite

Datadog's reported bid for Upwind was the hardest strategic move of the period. On 23 Oct, multiple sources reported that Datadog had offered about $4bn for the cloud security startup Upwind, with the bid reportedly rejected. On 25 Oct, further reports described a nearly $4bn proposal aimed at strengthening Datadog's cloud security and AI defences.

The bid did not land in isolation. On 21 Oct, Datadog added content on software supply chain policy enforcement and RUM synthetic SLOs and SLIs, plus a Modal customer case study. On 24 Oct, new Datadog videos covered incident response, user journey monitoring, AI integration in development and testing and code review education. The pattern is clear: security, reliability and developer workflow are being pulled into one operating narrative.

The hiring tape pointed in the same direction without overstating it. On 21 Oct, Datadog listed sales roles plus machine learning engineering roles, including a Staff Software Engineer for Watchdog Anomaly. On 23 Oct, another hiring snapshot included four engineering roles related to machine learning, and on 24 Oct, the company listed roles including a Senior Software Engineer for Analytics Data Platform and a Technical Escalations Engineer II.

New Relic resets under a new chief executive

New Relic's week was defined by leadership and messaging. On 24 Oct and 25 Oct, Nandini Ramani was reported as appointed chief executive, with the company positioning the move around AI observability expansion. On 25 Oct, New Relic also surfaced a report arguing that compliance and AI governance are driving demand for observability in financial services.

The content machine was already pointed at competitive displacement. On 24 Oct, New Relic launched two blog posts comparing its observability offering with Datadog and Splunk. On 22 Oct, it published posts on AI observability and advanced APM, with multilingual pages suggesting a broader go-to-market push. On 21 Oct, it added infrastructure monitoring content and financial-services observability material while removing older 2025 financial-services forecast pages.

There was also quiet website housekeeping. On 24 Oct, New Relic removed the MercadoLibre listing from its public customer wall and removed the dark blue gradient background from that wall, with no new customers added there. On 23 Oct, it launched posts on sales team expansion, observability-tool comparisons and network performance monitoring, while removing a product page. None of that is a strategy by itself, but the sequencing around a CEO appointment is worth noting.

The paid-media tape was unusually busy

The category was loud in Google ads. Datadog showed 30 new creatives on 26 Oct, after earlier batches of 23 on 21 Oct, 21 on 23 Oct and 19 on 24 Oct, with 40 creatives running in total. Sentry showed 16 new creatives on 26 Oct and 21 on 21 Oct, also with 40 running. New Relic had 40 creatives running across repeated observations from 21 Oct to 26 Oct, published by its UK and Australia entities. Grafana Labs showed 13 new creatives on 22 Oct, with 40 running.

The timing is the point. Grafana's ad activity appeared during its ObservabilityCON launch week. Sentry's earliest new ads were first shown on 15 and 16 Oct, before the heavier 21 to 26 Oct product and SDK run became visible. Datadog's newest creative wave began on 19 Oct and then met the Upwind reports later in the week. New Relic's active set included older creatives first shown in 2024 and 2025, even as the company changed chief executive and refreshed competitive content.

No pricing move was observed across Datadog, New Relic, Grafana Labs, Sentry or PagerDuty in the period. That silence matters because almost every other surface moved: ads, content, GitHub, events, jobs, incidents and leadership. The competitive fight this week was not about list price. It was about category definition.

Reliability remains the proof point

The category's promise was tested by its own status pages. On 20 Oct, Sentry reported a critical outage labelled 'Sentry is down', resolved after about 53 minutes. On 21 Oct, Sentry reported a major incident in which the service was not loading, lasting about 198 minutes. On 22 Oct, Sentry reported increased latency processing integration webhooks, resolved in about 21 minutes, and a critical incident where Sentry.io was not loading in the US region, resolved in about 60 minutes.

Sentry also had a security item to manage. CVE-2026-114139 was published on 21 Oct and observed on 22 Oct, affecting Sentry-Javascript SDK versions 9.36.0 through 9.47.2, 10.75.2 and 11.0.0-rc.1, where the webpack integration for @sentry/nextjs skips application middleware. The following days brought visible SDK work, including sentry-javascript 11.9.0 on 24 Oct and the .NET 7.0.0 release candidate on 25 Oct.

Grafana Labs also reported a busy incident run. On 21 Oct, it logged four incidents including Grafana Cloud unavailability in prod-gb-south-0 for about 584 minutes with minor impact, and a major failure of some GCK6 App Project Pages lasting about 91 minutes. On 22 Oct, it reported a major incident affecting loading of some GCK6 App Project Pages for about 128 minutes and increased timeout errors in alert rule evaluations in AWS Germany for about 98 minutes. On 24 Oct, it reported a major incident involving elevated trace ingestion latency and errors for Grafana Cloud Traces in AWS Germany, alongside a minor issue affecting some instances coming online after restart.
