The takeaway

The fortnight's signal is that payments infrastructure is moving up the stack on three fronts at once. Stripe tied AI routing, AI-agent treasury, stablecoin cards, Microsoft-level proximity and enterprise hiring into one sequence. Adyen and Checkout.com pushed broader merchant coverage across disputes, FX, local rails, Samsung Pay and in-person payments. Plaid expanded its developer and regulated-industry surfaces, but bank-connection incidents with Chase and Wells Fargo put reliability back in the centre of the story. For operators, the category is no longer won by being the cleanest API alone. It is being fought through distribution, orchestration, local payment breadth, incident performance and the ability to guide buyers through an increasingly crowded product map.

Stripe is trying to make AI spendable

Stripe's fortnight was unusually dense. On 21 Oct, Stripe completed the acquisition of OpenRouter for $7.5bn, a move into AI routing technology. On 24 Oct, it launched Treasury for AI agents. On 25 Oct, it was reported to be working with Plasma on stablecoin cards intended to be available in more than 100 countries by 2027.

The pattern is clear enough: Stripe is not treating AI as a checkout use case. It is building around agents as economic actors, with routing, treasury and card issuance all visible in the same week. The hiring surface matched that direction. On 26 Oct, Stripe added career listings for Account Executive roles in Money Management and Issuing & Treasury, plus Forward Deployed AI Accelerator Sales Development, while removing listings tied to Forward Deployed AI Accelerator Marketing and Partner Development Manager.

Distribution also widened. On 25 Oct, John Collison was appointed to Microsoft's board. During the same period, Stripe's Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team sponsorship was highlighted, and on 22 Oct Stripe was reported to be nearing a City of London office lease. This is the posture of a company selling financial infrastructure to larger organisations while trying to define the financial layer for AI-native software.

Adyen and Checkout.com go broader, not narrower

Adyen's week was a catalogue of adjacent merchant jobs. On 23 Oct, it introduced product pages for Adyen Orb, Talon One, Agent Marketplace, Usage-Based Billing and Managing Issuing Disputes. On 24 Oct, it added pages for chargeback prevention and a Pix payment journey in Brazil. On 26 Oct, its PHP API library added support for the Foreign Exchange API.

That is not a single-product story. It is an attempt to make the acquirer relationship harder to dislodge by adding billing, disputes, FX, local payment journeys and partner-led extensions around the core authorisation flow. The regional direction was also visible: on 22 Oct, Adyen was reported to be pushing expansion in India and announcing a new Asia-Pacific partnership.

Checkout.com moved on the same axis. On 22 Oct, it added an in-person payments product page. On 23 Oct, it announced a Samsung partnership, launching Samsung Pay on the Flow platform and expanding services across the EU and North America, while also entering the in-person payments market in response to merchant demand. Its SDK work followed the product direction: on 23 Oct, checkout-sdk-net 6.8.0 updated payment setups, including Pay by Bank under the paybybank key, and on 24 Oct, link_checkoutcom 26.3.0 added AlipayCH and AlipayHK alongside a security fix.

Plaid's connectivity week ended under pressure

Plaid had a visibly mixed fortnight. On 21 Oct, it added repositories for plaid-link-flutter, plaid-go and plaid-openapi. On 22 Oct, it launched repositories for plaid-link-ios-spm, plaid-link-ios and plaid-link-android. The developer surface was expanding across mobile, Go and OpenAPI.

The commercial surface also shifted towards regulated and institutional buyers. On 23 Oct, Plaid listed roles including Sales Engineer for Regulated Industries and Public Sector and Engineering Manager for Consumer, while adding customer engineering solutions sales engineer positions aimed at the public sector and regulated industries. On 24 Oct, it posted roles for a product designer focused on dashboards and a Product Marketing Manager for credit products.

Then reliability moved to the foreground. On 25 Oct, Plaid reported two major outages affecting Chase connections, lasting about 18 minutes and 79 minutes, both later resolved. On 26 Oct, it reported a major service disruption affecting Wells Fargo connections, with the incident marked as investigating. In bank connectivity, the product is not just API coverage. It is the lived confidence that high-value institutions remain reachable when customers try to move money or verify accounts.

The homepage tests are the tell

The most revealing changes were not the largest announcements. Stripe's homepage navigation flipped repeatedly in a narrow window. On 21 Oct, the site removed the 'Guide me' option and restored the heading 'Transform your enterprise with agile financial infrastructure'. On 22 Oct, 'Guide me' returned with 'Get Stripe product recommendations'. On 23 Oct, it was removed again. By 25 Oct, 'Guide me' and product recommendations were back.

That sequence matters because it shows an active fight over how to route demand. Stripe can sell a grand enterprise platform, or it can guide buyers through a recommendation path. In the observed week, it tested both messages more than once.

The same kind of timing showed up in paid acquisition. On 26 Oct, Stripe had 36 new Google ad creatives with 40 running in total. Adyen had 28 new creatives and the same total of 40 running. Earlier in the window, both had already been refreshing ads, with Stripe creatives first shown as early as 10 Oct and Adyen creatives first shown as early as 28 Sep. The competitive signal was not only that both were advertising. It was that both were keeping the creative bench full while product pages, jobs and developer releases changed underneath.

Developer plumbing stayed busy, and security stayed present

This market still competes through SDKs and plugins. Stripe released stripe-android v23.25.0 on 23 Oct with Touch 'n Go and TrueMoney API bindings and PaymentSheet support for payments and setup. On 24 Oct, stripe-python 4.2.1 replaced bundled CA certificates with Stripe root certificates because of a security issue with the previous bundle. On 25 Oct, Stripe created repositories for react-stripe-js and billing-extensions.

Adyen also added depth. On 21 Oct, it added repositories including adyen-commercetools, adyen-ios, adyen-android and adyen-react-native. On 25 Oct, adyen-web 6.47.0 added brand-specific placeholders in gift cards and detection of multiple AdyenCheckout instances on the same page. On 26 Oct, adyen-php-api-library 30.1.0 added Foreign Exchange API support.

GoCardless kept its commerce plugins moving. On 26 Oct, it released woocommerce-gateway-gocardless 3.0.3 to fix temporary subscription activation behaviour, ensuring activation expires after a set time and applies only while payment is pending or submitted. A smaller operational issue also appeared: on 23 Oct, GoCardless reported SSO login issues on its dashboard with no overall service impact, resolved after about 55 minutes.
